What Is IPL Therapy?
If your eyes feel dry, gritty, or irritated, relief may be closer than you think. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a gentle, noninvasive treatment that gets to the root of dry eye symptoms, reducing inflammation and helping your eyes feel more comfortable again.
At Eyecare Plus, we use Lumenis Optima IPL. This treatment can also improve skin tone and texture, making it a popular choice for overall eye and skin wellness.

How Does IPL Treat Dry Eye?
IPL therapy uses controlled pulses of light to gently heat the skin and reduce inflammation around your eyelids and glands. It’s especially helpful for people with:
- Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
- Rosacea or visible facial blood vessels
- Demodex mites contributing to eyelid irritation
By improving gland function and reducing inflammation, IPL can help your eyes stay naturally moisturized, without relying on constant eye drops.

How Long Does IPL Take to Provide Relief?
Every patient is different, and each treatment plan will be too. However, many patients notice decreased inflammation within 1–2 sessions. Our team will work with you every step of the way to make sure the treatment is effective and your symptoms are improving.
Usually, it takes about 4 sessions to achieve desired results. Once you’ve found relief from your symptoms, we’ll discuss a personalized maintenance schedule for long-term results (usually 1–2 times a year).
What to Expect in Your IPL Treatment
The Optima IPL treatment is professionally administered by our eye care team in-office. During the treatment, you’ll wear IPL protective goggles or pads. Each session lasts around 15 minutes.
Throughout the treatment, you might experience warmth as the light is applied to your skin. However, the device is gentle and should not feel uncomfortable.
After the treatment, you may notice some redness and warmth around the treated areas. This usually disappears in a few hours. You should avoid direct sunlight for a few days after treatment and apply sunscreen to protect your skin.
